# Alexander Ryrie

**Alexander Ryrie** (27 December 1827 – 29 May 1909) was an Australian politician, who was born in [Sydney](/source/Sydney) to [Stewart Ryrie](/source/Stewart_Ryrie_(colonial_settler)), a pastoralist and deputy commissary-general, and his second wife, Isabella Cassels. He farmed with his brothers in the [Monaro district](/source/Monaro_(New_South_Wales)), notably near [Bombala](/source/Bombala,_New_South_Wales) and [Michelago](/source/Michelago,_New_South_Wales).[1] On 5 July 1860, he married Charlotte Faunce, with whom he had nine children,[1] including [Major General](/source/Major_General_(Australia)) Sir [Granville de Laune Ryrie](/source/Granville_Ryrie)[2] and William M. Ryrie.

In 1880, he was elected to the [New South Wales Legislative Assembly](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Assembly) as the member for [Braidwood](/source/Electoral_district_of_Braidwood), serving until his defeat in 1891.[3] In 1892, he was appointed to the [New South Wales Legislative Council](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Council), where he served until his death at [Paddington](/source/Paddington,_New_South_Wales) on 29 May 1909.[1]
