Alexander Raab was born in [Győr](/source/Gy%C5%91r) (also known as Raab), [Hungary](/source/Hungary). He studied at the [Vienna Conservatory](/source/University_of_Music_and_Performing_Arts%2C_Vienna) under [Hans Schmitt](/source/Hans_Schmitt) (1835–1907), [Robert Fuchs](/source/Robert_Fuchs_(composer)) and [Theodor Leschetizky](/source/Theodor_Leschetizky) and became acquainted with [Johannes Brahms](/source/Johannes_Brahms).<ref name=Heitman>[http://www.stevenheitman-ia.com/html/performance_arts_videos.html Steven Heitman website] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090107195140/http://www.stevenheitman-ia.com/html/performance_arts_videos.html |date=2009-01-07 }}</ref> He presented recitals with the violinist [Jan Kubelík](/source/Jan_Kubel%C3%ADk) in England, Russia, Germany and France.

He immigrated to the US in 1915, and became Head of the Piano Department at [Chicago Musical College](/source/Chicago_Musical_College), before moving to [Berkeley, California](/source/Berkeley%2C_California), where he became esteemed as one of the best piano teachers on the West Coast.<ref name=Owens/>
