Parent was president of [United Auto Workers](/source/United_Auto_Workers) Local 195 in [Windsor, Ontario](/source/Windsor%2C_Ontario) in the 1940s,<ref>Ford Tension Subsides; Local 195 Waits Results Ford, Ken. [Toronto, Ont]. 06 May 1944: 3.</ref> and a supporter of the [Communist Party of Canada](/source/Communist_Party_of_Canada), which at the time was known as the [Labor-Progressive Party](/source/Labor-Progressive_Party).<ref name="uaw"/> In the [1945 Ontario general election](/source/1945_Ontario_general_election), Parent was nominated by the UAW-[CIO](/source/Congress_of_Industrial_Organizations) as one of three Labour candidates in the election. Parent ran in [Essex North](/source/Essex_North_(provincial_electoral_district)), [George Burt](/source/George_Burt_(Canada)), the UAW's Canadian director, ran in [Windsor-Walkerville](/source/Windsor%E2%80%94Walkerville_(provincial_electoral_district)) and Windsor mayor [Arthur Reaume](/source/Arthur_Reaume) ran in [Windsor—Sandwich](/source/Windsor%E2%80%94Sandwich). Parent was elected, and initially caucused with the Liberal Party but quit the Liberal caucus in January 1946, denouncing the Liberals as "reactionary", in order to sit as a "straight Labor representative", caucusing with Labor-Progressive MPPs [J.B.
