'''Alexander Outlaw''' (1738–1826) was an American frontiersman and politician, active in the formation and early history of the state of [Tennessee](/source/Tennessee). A veteran of the [American Revolutionary War](/source/American_Revolutionary_War), he settled on the [Appalachian](/source/Appalachian_Mountains) frontier, in what is now [Jefferson County, Tennessee](/source/Jefferson_County%2C_Tennessee), in the early 1780s. He served simultaneously in the assembly of the failed [State of Franklin](/source/State_of_Franklin) as well as the legislature of its parent state, [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina). He was a delegate to the North Carolina convention that ratified the [United States Constitution](/source/United_States_Constitution) in 1789, and to the Tennessee state constitutional convention in 1796.<ref name=scw>Samuel Cole Williams, "[https://books.google.com/books?id=UWq0CtvLn_4C&pg=PA324 Alexander Outlaw]," ''History of the Lost State of Franklin'' (1933), pp. 324-325.</ref>

He represented Jefferson County in the [Tennessee Senate](/source/Tennessee_Senate) during the Third General Assembly (1799–1801) and was elected [Speaker](/source/speaker_(politics)).<ref>''[https://books.google.com/books?id=YoFIAAAAYAAJ&q=%22charles+inman%22+sevier Tennessee Blue Book]'' (1890), pp. 197-198.</ref> After his senate term, he focused primarily on [land speculation](/source/land_speculation) and law. He died in [Dallas County, Alabama](/source/Dallas_County%2C_Alabama), in 1826.<ref name=scw />

[Rural Mount](/source/Rural_Mount), a house built by Outlaw for his son-in-law, Joseph Hamilton, still stands near [Morristown, Tennessee](/source/Morristown%2C_Tennessee), and is listed on the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places). Outlaw was the grandfather of U.S. Senator [Alexander Outlaw Anderson](/source/Alexander_Outlaw_Anderson).<ref name=scw />
