**Alexander Cesare Gemignani** (born July 3, 1979) is an American [actor](/source/Actor), [tenor](/source/Tenor), musician, and [conductor](/source/Conducting), known for his work on [Broadway](/source/Broadway_(theatre)). He was nominated for a [Tony Award](/source/Tony_Award) for his performance in *[Carousel](/source/Carousel_(musical))* and a [Drama Desk Award](/source/Drama_Desk_Award) for his performance in *[Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street](/source/Sweeney_Todd%3A_The_Demon_Barber_of_Fleet_Street).*

## Early and personal life

Gemignani is the son of Broadway musical director [Paul Gemignani](/source/Paul_Gemignani) and soprano [Carolann Page](/source/Carolann_Page). He was raised in [Tenafly, New Jersey](/source/Tenafly%2C_New_Jersey) and graduated from [Tenafly High School](/source/Tenafly_High_School) in 1997.[1] He is a graduate of the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan)'s Musical Theater Department.

Gemignani was married in August 2008 to actor/director Erin Ortman.

## Career

Gemignani is known for his roles in Broadway musicals, including *[Assassins](/source/Assassins_(musical))*, *[Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street](/source/Sweeney_Todd%3A_The_Demon_Barber_of_Fleet_Street)*, [*Les Misérables*](/source/Les_Mis%C3%A9rables_(musical)), *[Sunday in the Park with George](/source/Sunday_in_the_Park_with_George)*, and *[Carousel](/source/Carousel_(musical))*, receiving a [Tony Award](/source/Tony_Award) nomination for the latter. His film and television credits include *[The Producers](/source/The_Producers_(2005_film))*, *[The Good Wife](/source/The_Good_Wife)*, *[Homeland](/source/Homeland_(TV_series))*, [*Chicago Fire*](/source/Chicago_Fire_(TV_series)), *[Empire](/source/Empire_(2015_TV_series))*, and *[The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel](/source/The_Marvelous_Mrs._Maisel)* (recurring as Janusz, the eventual husband of the Weissmans’ maid, Zelda).[2]

Gemignani participated in a memorable performance of "Opening Doors" from *[Merrily We Roll Along](/source/Merrily_We_Roll_Along_(musical))* at [Symphony Space](/source/Symphony_Space)'s *Wall to Wall Sondheim* event celebrating [Stephen Sondheim](/source/Stephen_Sondheim)'s 75th birthday in March 2005. Recently, Gemignani has begun to work as a music director, following in his father's footsteps. He served as the conductor, music director, and music supervisor for the 2020 revival of *West Side Story*, and has developed pieces for the [Public Theatre](/source/Public_Theatre) and the [Roundabout Theatre Company](/source/Roundabout_Theatre_Company).[5][6] He served as music director and orchestrator for the Fiasco Theatre production of *Merrily We Roll Along*.[7] He is the artistic director of both the [Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's](/source/Eugene_O'Neill_Theater_Center) National Music Theater Conference as well as the American Music Theatre Project at [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University). He is also an educator and is an associate professor at Northwestern University.
