[Major-General](/source/Major_general_(United_Kingdom)) '''Alexander Hugh Gatehouse''', {{postnominals|country=GBR|size=100|sep=,|DSO1|MC1}} (20 May 1895 – 21 August 1964) was a senior [British Army](/source/British_Army) [officer](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) who commanded the [10th Armoured Division](/source/10th_Armoured_Division_(United_Kingdom)) during the [North African campaign](/source/North_African_campaign) of the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War).

==Military career==
Gatehouse joined the [British Army](/source/British_Army) and, after graduating from the [Royal Military College, Sandhurst](/source/Royal_Military_College%2C_Sandhurst), was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) as a [second lieutenant](/source/second_lieutenant) into the [Northumberland Fusiliers](/source/Royal_Northumberland_Fusiliers) in October 1914 and fought in the [First World War](/source/First_World_War).<ref name=lh>[http://www.kcl.ac.uk/lhcma/locreg/GATEHOUSE.shtml Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives]</ref><ref>{{London Gazette|issue=28920|page=7777|date=29 September 1914|supp=y}}</ref> He was promoted to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) in May 1915.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29310|page=9553|date=28 September 1915}}</ref> He was awarded the [Military Cross](/source/Military_Cross) (MC) in September 1918, the citation for which reads:

{{Quote|For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while commanding a composite company of twenty Lewis guns. Under heavy enemy attacks his courage and cheerfulness inspired his men and caused them to hold on to a difficult position under very trying circumstances.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=30901|page=10953|date=13 September 1918|supp=y}}</ref>}}

In November 1918, with only a few days left in the war, Gatehouse was awarded a [Bar](/source/Medal_bar) to his MC. The Bar's citation stated the following:

{{Quote|For conspicuous gallantry in command of a company of fourteen tanks. He followed close behind, as they proceeded into action, under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, and superintended their movements in the clearing of two enemy positions. During this time he was knocked down by a shell bursting beside him. In two subsequent actions he again displayed great courage, and the success of these tanks was in great measure due to his skill and judgment.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=30997|page=13138|date=5 November 1918|supp=y}}</ref>}}
