'''Alexander Craig Sellar''' (17 October 1835 – 16 January 1890) was a Scottish lawyer and [Liberal Party](/source/Scottish_Liberal_Party) (later [Liberal Unionist](/source/Liberal_Unionist_Party)) politician.

Sellar was the son of [Patrick Sellar](/source/Patrick_Sellar) of Westfield, Morayshire, a lawyer, factor and sheep farmer, and his wife Ann (née Craig). He was educated at [Rugby School](/source/Rugby_School), and at [Balliol College, Oxford](/source/Balliol_College%2C_Oxford) where he was a favoured student of [Benjamin Jowett](/source/Benjamin_Jowett). He became a Scottish [Advocate](/source/Advocate) in 1862 and was legal secretary to the [Lord Advocate for Scotland](/source/Lord_Advocate) from 1870 to 1874.<ref name=Debrett>[https://archive.org/stream/debrettshouseo1886londuoft Debretts Guide to the House of Commons 1886]</ref> In 1873 he published ''Manual of the Education Act for Scotland''.<ref>[https://openlibrary.org/b/OL17264737M/Manual_of_the_Education_Act_for_Scotland Open Library]</ref> He was a [Justice of the Peace](/source/Justice_of_the_Peace) and [Deputy Lieutenant](/source/Deputy_Lieutenant) for [Argyllshire](/source/Argyllshire).<ref name=Debrett/>

In 1870 he married Gertrude Smith, daughter of Octavius Henry Smith.
 
In 1880 he stoody unsuccessfully for [Parliament](/source/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom) at [Plymouth Devonport](/source/Plymouth_Devonport_(UK_Parliament_constituency)). In 1882 he was elected [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) for [Haddington Burghs](/source/Haddington_Burghs_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) until the constituency was merged in the [Redistribution of Seats Act 1885](/source/Redistribution_of_Seats_Act_1885). In 1885 he was elected MP for [Partick](/source/Partick_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) which he held until his death at the age of 54 in 1890.<ref name="craig1918-1949" /> When the Liberal split in 1886 over [Irish Home Rule](/source/Irish_Home_Rule), Sellar joined the breakaway [Liberal Unionist Party](/source/Liberal_Unionist_Party).<ref name="craig1918-1949" />
