# Alexander Bingley

[Admiral](/source/Admiral_(Royal_Navy)) **Sir** **Alexander Noel Campbell Bingley**, (15 February 1905 – 28 September 1972) was a [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) officer who served as [Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth](/source/Commander-in-Chief,_Portsmouth) and [Allied Command Channel](/source/Allied_Command_Channel) from 1961 to 1963.

## Naval career

Bingley joined the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) as a cadet in 1918.[1]

Bingley served during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) on the staff of the commander-in-chief, [Home Fleet](/source/Home_Fleet).[1] He went on to be captain of the [aircraft carrier](/source/Aircraft_carrier) [HMS *Slinger*](/source/HMS_Slinger_(D26)) in 1943, of the aircraft carrier [HMS *Biter*](/source/HMS_Biter_(D97)) in 1944, and of the [Mobile Naval Air Base](/source/Mobile_Naval_Air_Bases) HMS *Nabaron* in 1945.[1]

After the war, Bingley was appointed deputy director of air warfare.[1] He went on to be [chief of staff](/source/Chief_of_staff) to the flag officer (air) and then commander of the aircraft carrier [HMS *Eagle*](/source/HMS_Eagle_(R05)) in 1952.[1] He was appointed [Fifth Sea Lord](/source/Fifth_Sea_Lord) and deputy chief of Naval Staff (Air) in 1954 and [Flag Officer, Aircraft Carriers](/source/Flag_Officer,_Aircraft_Carriers) in 1958.[1] He was made [commander-in-chief, Mediterranean Fleet](/source/Mediterranean_Fleet) and [NATO](/source/NATO) commander [Allied Forces Mediterranean](/source/Allied_Forces_Mediterranean) in 1959 and then [Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth](/source/Commander-in-Chief,_Portsmouth) and Allied Commander-in-Chief, Channel in 1961; he retired in 1963.[1]

## Personal life

Bingley married [Juliet Vick](/source/Juliet_Bingley) in 1948. After his death, she resumed her career as a social worker after a gap of 28 years, and was appointed a [Member of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Member_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) in 1970. They had three children,[2] and lived at [Hoddesdon](/source/Hoddesdon) in [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire).[3]
