Wynter was played in a [wing-back](/source/wing-back_(association_football)) role by Portsmouth manager [Andy Awford](/source/Andy_Awford), despite never having played in the position before, and said that he was "ready to thrive" in his new position.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Wilson |first1=Steve |date=17 October 2014 |title=Wynter revels in new role |url=http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/wynter-revels-in-new-role-1-6362771 |newspaper=The News |location=Portsmouth |accessdate=10 January 2015 }}</ref> Following a string of poor performances, Awford scrapped his 3-5-2 system that utilised wing-backs, but did not blame Wynter or his teammates for the lack of function within the system.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Allen |first1=Neil |date=21 October 2014 |title=Awford scraps wing-back system |url=http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/awford-scraps-wing-back-system-1-6368657 |newspaper=The News |location=Portsmouth |accessdate=10 January 2015 }}</ref> After making 15 appearances for Portsmouth in all competitions, Awford brought in [Gillingham](/source/Gillingham_F.C.) loanee [Matt Fish](/source/Matt_Fish_(footballer)) as a replacement for Wynter, but insisted he would remain a part of his squad but the situation would be reassessed in the January transfer window.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Allen |first1=Neil |date=26 November 2014 |title=Awford: Wynter still part of the squad |url=http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/awford-wynter-still-part-of-squad-1-6440814 |newspaper=The News |location=Portsmouth |accessdate=10 January 2015 }}</ref> However, on 28 December, both Fish and Wynter returned to their parent clubs after the loans were not renewed with both players having fallen out of favour at [Fratton Park](/source/Fratton_Park).<ref>{{cite news |last1=Allen |first1=Neil |date=28 December 2014 |title=Defensive duo depart Fratton Park |url=http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/defensive-duo-depart-fratton-park-1-6493333 |newspaper=The News |location=Portsmouth |accessdate=10 January 2015 }}</ref>

===Colchester United===
Wynter rejoined [Colchester United](/source/Colchester_United_F.C.) on 10 January 2015, on this occasion on a permanent basis, signing an 18-month contract ahead of the U's League One game against Peterborough United the same day.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Marston |first1=Carl |date=10 January 2015 |title=Colchester United sign Alex Wynter from Crystal Palace |url=http://www.sudburymercury.co.uk/sport/colchester_united_sign_alex_wynter_from_crystal_palace_1_3912081 |newspaper=Sudbury Mercury |location=Sudbury |accessdate=10 January 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304103455/http://www.sudburymercury.co.uk/sport/colchester_united_sign_alex_wynter_from_crystal_palace_1_3912081 |archive-date=4 March 2016 |url-status=dead |df=dmy-all }}</ref> He made his second debut for the club later that day, starting in defence and helping his teammates to a clean sheet in a 2–0 victory at [London Road](/source/London_Road_Stadium).<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/30663426 |title=Peterborough 0–2 Colchester |date=10 January 2015 |publisher=BBC Sport |access-date=10 January 2015 }}</ref>

During Colchester's [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) fourth round match against [Tottenham Hotspur](/source/Tottenham_Hotspur_F.C.) on 30 January 2016, Wynter was involved in a sickening collision with fellow U's defender [Tom Eastman](/source/Tom_Eastman) after just two minutes of the game. Wynter suffered concussion and a seizure while on the field. He was taken to hospital, where he was reported to have been sitting up and talking by half-time in the 4–1 defeat for Colchester.{{citation needed|date=September 2020}} He finally made a return to first-team action on 23 April when he came on for [Gavin Massey](/source/Gavin_Massey) in a tactical substitution following [Joe Edwards](/source/Joe_Edwards_(footballer%2C_born_1990))' dismissal in the 17th minute of the 3–0 defeat to [Burton Albion](/source/Burton_Albion_F.C.), a result which saw Colchester relegated to League Two.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36060907 |title=Colchester United 0–3 Burton Albion |date=23 April 2016 |publisher=BBC Sport |accessdate=23 April 2016 }}</ref>

Despite Colchester suffering relegation to League Two, Wynter signed a two-year contract extension with the club on 27 April 2016.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Waldron |first1=Jonathan |date=27 April 2016 |title=Alex Wynter has put pen to paper on a fresh deal with Colchester United |url=http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/sport/colchesterunited/14455490.Wynter_signs_new_contract_with_the_U_s/? |newspaper=Daily Gazette |location=Colchester |accessdate=27 April 2016 }}</ref> He ended the [2015–16 season](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_Colchester_United_F.C._season) with 16 appearances for the U's.<ref name="Games played by Alex Wynter in 2015/2016">{{Soccerbase season|53111|2015|name=Alex Wynter|accessdate=8 July 2015}}</ref>

Wynter described the [2016–17](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_Colchester_United_F.C._season) season as not "a great season for me personally", where he had been "mainly on the bench".<ref>{{cite news |last=Waldron |first=Jonathan |date=5 May 2017 |title=Alex Wynter was part of the Colchester United side that beat Preston North End to stay up on the final day of the 2014–15 season |url=http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/sport/colchesterunited/15265883.Alex_Wynter_hoping_for_more_final_day_success_with_Colchester_United/ |newspaper=Daily Gazette |location=Colchester |accessdate=7 May 2017 }}</ref> He played just 20 games across the season, five of which were cup matches.<ref name="Games played by Alex Wynter in 2016/2017">{{soccerbase season|53111|2016|accessdate=7 May 2017}}</ref>

===Maidstone United===
On 4 August 2017, Wynter's contract with Colchester United was cancelled by mutual consent and he opted to join [National League](/source/National_League_(division)) side [Maidstone United](/source/Maidstone_United_F.C.) the same day.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40828852 |title=Alex Wynter: Maidstone United sign Colchester United defender |date=4 August 2017 |publisher=BBC Sport |accessdate=4 August 2017 }}</ref>

===Eastleigh===
On 29 June 2018, Wynter agreed to join fellow National League side [Eastleigh](/source/Eastleigh_F.C.) on a one-year deal following an impressive campaign at Maidstone.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.eastleighfc.com/spitfires-secure-double-signing/ |title=Spitfires Secure Double Signing |date=29 June 2018 |publisher=Eastleigh Official Site |accessdate=30 June 2018 }}</ref> Wynter was released at the end of the 2021–22 season.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.eastleighfc.com/news-2021-22-released-and-retained-list/|title=2021/22 RELEASED AND RETAINED LIST|website=www.eastleighfc.com|date=16 May 2022|accessdate=17 May 2022}}</ref>
