**Alexander George Wharf** (born 4 June 1975)[1] is an English [cricket](/source/Cricket) umpire and former international cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-handed fast-medium bowler, who ended his career with the [Welsh](/source/Wales) side [Glamorgan County Cricket Club](/source/Glamorgan_County_Cricket_Club). Currently, he is a member of the [ICC Elite umpire panel](/source/ICC_Elite_umpire_panel).

## Domestic career

Wharf commenced his first-class cricketing career with [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_County_Cricket_Club) in 1994, and played seven such matches for the county until 1997.[1] He later joined [Nottinghamshire](/source/Nottinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club), before moving to Glamorgan in 2000.

Wharf announced his retirement from cricket during the [2009 County Championship](/source/2009_County_Championship), after failing to recover from a long-term injury. In 2010, Wharf played in the South Wales Premier Cricket League for Sully Centurians.[2]

## International career

He never played [Test cricket](/source/Test_cricket), but made his [England](/source/England_cricket_team) [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International) debut at [Trent Bridge](/source/Trent_Bridge), [Nottingham](/source/Nottingham), against [India](/source/India_national_cricket_team) in 2004. Altogether he won 13 ODI caps.

## Umpiring career

In 2011, he was added to the [England and Wales Cricket Board](/source/England_and_Wales_Cricket_Board) list of reserve umpires, alongside the late [Russell Evans](/source/Russell_Evans_(cricketer)) and [Billy Taylor](/source/Billy_Taylor_(cricketer%2C_born_1977)).[2]

Along with [Rob Bailey](/source/Rob_Bailey_(cricketer)), he was one of the two onfield umpires for the [Hurricane Relief T20 Challenge](/source/Hurricane_Relief_T20_Challenge) match played at [Lord's](/source/Lord's) on 31 May 2018.[3] The next month, he stood in his first [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International) (ODI) match, between [England and Australia](/source/Australian_cricket_team_in_England_in_2018), at [Sophia Gardens](/source/Sophia_Gardens_(cricket_ground)) in [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff) on 16 June 2018.[4]

In October 2019, he was appointed as one of the twelve umpires to officiate matches in the [2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier](/source/2019_ICC_T20_World_Cup_Qualifier) tournament in the United Arab Emirates.[5] In February 2020, the ICC named him as one of the umpires to officiate in matches during the [2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup](/source/2020_ICC_Women's_T20_World_Cup) in Australia.[6] In June 2021, Wharf was named as the fourth official for the [2021 ICC World Test Championship Final](/source/2021_ICC_World_Test_Championship_Final).[7] In August 2021, in the third match between [England and India](/source/Indian_cricket_team_in_England_in_2021), Wharf stood in his first Test match as an umpire.[8]

In February 2022, he was named as one of the on-field umpires for the [2022 Women's Cricket World Cup](/source/2022_Women's_Cricket_World_Cup) in New Zealand.[9][10] In September 2023, he was named as one of the sixteen match officials for [2023 Cricket World Cup](/source/2023_Cricket_World_Cup).[11][12] In March 2025, he was promoted to [ICC Elite Umpire Panel](/source/ICC_Elite_Umpire_Panel).[13]
