# Alex Shibicky

**Alexandre Dimitri Shibicky** (May 19, 1914 – July 9, 2005) was a Canadian [ice hockey](/source/Ice_hockey) [forward](/source/Forward_(ice_hockey)) who played for the [New York Rangers](/source/New_York_Rangers) of the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) from 1935 to 1946.

Shibicky was also a [Stanley Cup](/source/Stanley_Cup) winner in [1940](/source/1940_Stanley_Cup_Finals), and the vice-president of the first incarnation of the [National Hockey League Players' Association](/source/National_Hockey_League_Players'_Association), but he is best known for being the first player to use a [slapshot](/source/Slapshot), which he did in 1937. He said he learned it in practice from teammate [Fred "Bun" Cook](/source/Bun_Cook) during the [1935–36 season](/source/1935%E2%80%9336_NHL_season). He also spent three years in the [Canadian Forces](/source/Canadian_Forces) during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War).
