**John Alexander McMillan III** (May 9, 1932 – April 19, 2024) was a [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina) [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) politician who served five terms in the [U.S. House of Representatives](/source/U.S._House_of_Representatives), representing [North Carolina's 9th congressional district](/source/North_Carolina's_9th_congressional_district) from 1985 to 1995.

## Biography

McMillan, a native of [Charlotte, North Carolina](/source/Charlotte%2C_North_Carolina), graduated from [Woodberry Forest School](/source/Woodberry_Forest_School) in [Orange, Virginia](/source/Orange%2C_Virginia). McMillan earned an A.B. in History from the [University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill](/source/University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill) in 1954 and earned his [M.B.A.](/source/M.B.A.) from the [University of Virginia](/source/University_of_Virginia). While a student at UNC, McMillan joined the [Sigma Alpha Epsilon](/source/Sigma_Alpha_Epsilon) fraternity.[1]

After serving two years as an intelligence agent in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army), McMillan worked in investment banking, was CFO of Ruddick Corp. from 1970 to 1976 and was CEO of [Harris Teeter](/source/Harris_Teeter) Super Markets from 1977 to 1983. He served on the [Mecklenburg County](/source/Mecklenburg_County%2C_North_Carolina) board of commissioners and chaired its board of [social services](/source/Social_services) before being elected to Congress in 1984. He did not run for re-election in 1994. McMillan served for three years as Hipp Chair on the faculty of [The Citadel](/source/The_Citadel_(military_college)).

McMillan died on April 19, 2024 in Charleston, South Carolina.
