Kirk, a 7'0" [center](/source/Center_(basketball)), played at [Los Alamos High School](/source/Los_Alamos_High_School) in [Los Alamos](/source/Los_Alamos%2C_New_Mexico), [New Mexico](/source/New_Mexico).  He came to the University of New Mexico in 2010, averaging 4.7 [points](/source/Points_per_game) and 3.7 [rebounds per game](/source/rebounds_per_game) in the [2010–11 season](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_NCAA_Division_I_men's_basketball_season). He competed for the $2 million prize, and for The Stickmen, he averaged 6.5 points per game.
