## History

It was founded at the end of the 13th century[4] and first mentioned in 1348 in the [Nikon Chronicle](/source/Nikon_Chronicle). Aleksin was sacked by [Khan Akhmat](/source/Ahmed_Khan_bin_K%C3%BCch%C3%BCk) in 1472 during his invasion of the [Grand Duchy of Moscow](/source/Grand_Duchy_of_Moscow). Because of its location on the [Oka River](/source/Oka_River), it was, for a while, an important inland port. Aleksin was granted town status in 1777.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

The town expanded in the 1930s with the construction of [a chemical plant](/source/Aleksin_Chemical_Plant) [[ru](https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%90%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%81%D0%B8%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D1%85%D0%B8%D0%BC%D0%B8%D1%87%D0%B5%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%B1%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%82)].

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Aleksin was under [German](/source/Nazi_Germany) occupation from 29 November 1941 until 17 December 1941.[13]

## Administrative and municipal status

Within the [framework of administrative divisions](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Administrative_divisions), Aleksin serves as the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of [Aleksinsky District](/source/Aleksinsky_District)[1] and is incorporated within it as a [town under district jurisdiction](/source/Town_of_district_significance).[2][3] As a [municipal division](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Municipal_divisions), the town of Aleksin, together with 154 [rural localities](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) in Aleksinsky District, is incorporated as **Aleksin Urban Okrug**.[3][7]
