==Career==
Born in the [Ballynafeigh](/source/Ballynafeigh) district of [Belfast](/source/Belfast), McCartney played youth football with Rosetta National School, Ferndale of the Belfast Alliance League, and then Hatfield, before beginning his senior career in 1900 with [Distillery](/source/Lisburn_Distillery_F.C.).<ref name=NIFG>{{Cite web | title = Alec McCartney | author =  | work = nifootball.blogspot.co.uk | date = 3 August 2007 | accessdate = 19 April 2018 | url = http://nifootball.blogspot.co.uk/2007/08/alec-mccartney.html}}</ref> McCartney later played for [Ulster](/source/Ulster_F.C.) and [Linfield](/source/Linfield_F.C.) before moving to England to join [Everton](/source/Everton_F.C.), where he spent a single season without making a League appearance.
