# Alea, Argolis

**Alea** (Greek: Αλέα, before 1928: Μπουγιάτι – *Bougiati*)[1] is a village and a former community in [Argolis](/source/Argolis), [Peloponnese](/source/Peloponnese_(region)), [Greece](/source/Greece). Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality [Argos-Mykines](/source/Argos-Mykines), of which it is a municipal unit.[2] The municipal unit has an area of 143.206 km2.[3] The seat of the community was [Skoteini](/source/Skoteini). Alea is situated in the mountainous northwestern part of Argolis, 5 km southeast of [Kandila](/source/Kandila,_Arcadia), 12 km northwest of [Lyrkeia](/source/Lyrkeia), 14 km northeast of [Levidi](/source/Levidi) and 27 km north of [Tripoli](/source/Tripoli,_Greece). The [Greek National Road 66](/source/Greek_National_Road_66) (Levidi – Nemea) passes near Skoteini.

## History

[Alea](/source/Alea_(Arcadia)) was an ancient city of [Arcadia](/source/Arcadia_(ancient_region)), founded by the mythical king [Aleus](/source/Aleus), a son of [Apheidas](/source/Apheidas). It was situated near [Stymphalos](/source/Stymphalus_(Arcadia)). The city had temples of [Artemis of Ephesus](/source/Artemis), [Athena Alea](/source/Athena_Alea) and [Dionysus](/source/Dionysus). Every other year the [Skiereia](/source/Skiereia), a celebration for the god Dionysus, were celebrated.[4] Traces of ancient buildings have been found near the modern village.
