The parish includes the [hamlets](/source/hamlet_(place)) of [Crendell](/source/Crendell) and [Cripplestyle](/source/Cripplestyle). The village has a [Co-op Food](/source/Co-op_Food) convenience store, veterinary clinic and part-time GP surgery. There are three churches in the village: Alderholt Chapel,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.alderholtchapel.org/|title=Alderholt Chapel|year=2011|accessdate=6 January 2014|publisher=alderholtchapel.org}}</ref> St James' Church of England, and the Tabernacle Gospel Church.

The village also has a large recreation ground with a sports and social club, two tennis courts, and a children's play area.{{citation needed|date=June 2024}}

==Transport==
The main road running through the village is the B3078 connecting Alderholt to [Fordingbridge](/source/Fordingbridge) and [Shaftesbury](/source/Shaftesbury).

Until 1964, Alderholt was served by [Daggons Road railway station](/source/Daggons_Road_railway_station), west of the village on a line connecting to Fordingbridge and [Salisbury](/source/Salisbury) to the north, and [Verwood](/source/Verwood) and [Wimborne](/source/Wimborne_Minster) to the south.

The civil parish was created in 1894.<ref>Kelly's Directory of Dorset, 1895</ref> A book was published in 1994 by Alderholt Parish Council recording parish details and interest over the 100 years.

Alderholt is in [Dorset unitary district](/source/Dorset_(district)).
