It takes the form of a ''[tragédie en musique](/source/trag%C3%A9die_en_musique)'' in a prologue and five acts. The [libretto](/source/libretto), by [Antoine Danchet](/source/Antoine_Danchet), is based on cantos IV, VI and VII of [Ariosto](/source/Ludovico_Ariosto)'s [epic poem](/source/epic_poetry) ''[Orlando furioso](/source/Orlando_furioso)'' and tells of the love of the enchantress Alcine for the [paladin](/source/paladin) Astolphe ([Astolfo](/source/Astolfo)).

The opera was a failure at its first performance.
