==Military service==
Prior to his tenure as an electoral MP, Samuel fought in the [Second Boer War](/source/Second_Boer_War) in the 4th Contingent of the Mounted Rifles. He was a member of the NZEF during [World War I](/source/World_War_I) and served as a major in the [Wellington Mounted Rifles](/source/Wellington_Mounted_Rifles). Samuel was elected to the {{NZ electorate link|Ohinemuri}} electorate in the [1925 general election](/source/1925_New_Zealand_general_election).
