Rutherford was born in [Watford, Ontario](/source/Watford%2C_Ontario), [Canada](/source/Canada). He immigrated to the [United States](/source/United_States) in 1883 with his parents, who settled in [Carbondale, Pennsylvania](/source/Carbondale%2C_Pennsylvania). He attended [Blair Academy](/source/Blair_Academy) in [Blairstown, NJ](/source/Blairstown%2C_NJ), and the Scranton-Lackawanna Business College. He graduated from the [University of Pennsylvania Law School](/source/University_of_Pennsylvania_Law_School) at [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia) in 1904, where he became a member of the [Delta Chi](/source/Delta_Chi) fraternity. ### Early career He served as deputy [prothonotary](/source/Prothonotary) of [Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania](/source/Lackawanna_County%2C_Pennsylvania), from 1907 to 1914. He moved to [Honesdale, Pennsylvania](/source/Honesdale%2C_Pennsylvania), in 1918 and continued the practice of law.
