# Alaric Rose

**Alaric Pearson Rose** was [Dean of Hong Kong](/source/St._John's_Cathedral_(Hong_Kong))[1] from 1941 until 1952.

Rose was born 26 September 1909 in [Lye and Stourbridge](/source/Lye,_West_Midlands), [England](/source/England).[2] He was educated at [St Edmund Hall, Oxford](/source/St_Edmund_Hall,_Oxford) and [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1933.[3] After a [curacy](/source/Curate) in [Gateshead](/source/Gateshead) he was [Chaplain](/source/Chaplain) at [St. John's Cathedral, Hong Kong](/source/St._John's_Cathedral_(Hong_Kong)) until his appointment as [Dean](/source/Dean_(religion));[4] and [Canon Residentiary](/source/Canon_(priest)) afterwards.

Rose was appointed as the first full-time philosophy lecturer at the University of Hong Kong in 1952 (HKU Council Minutes, 22 May 1952, 7), and often acted as Head of Department. He retired from the university in 1961.

Rose died in [Harbourne](/source/Harbourne), [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham), England on 27 December 1985.[5]
