# Alan T. Nolan

American military historian and lawyer (1923–2008)

**Alan T. Nolan** (19 January 1923, in [Evansville, Indiana](/source/Evansville%2C_Indiana) – 27 July 2008, in [Indianapolis](/source/Indianapolis)) was an American military historian, best remembered for his books *The Iron Brigade* (1961), *Lee Considered: General Robert E. Lee and Civil War History* (1991), and *"Rally, Once Again!": Selected Civil War Writings* (2000). A graduate of [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University) and [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School), he was a [law clerk](/source/Law_clerk) under [Sherman Minton](/source/Sherman_Minton) at the [United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit](/source/United_States_Court_of_Appeals_for_the_Seventh_Circuit) in [Chicago](/source/Chicago). He would later go on to serve as [chairman](/source/Chairman) of the [disciplinary committee](/source/Disciplinary_counseling) for the [Indiana Supreme Court](/source/Indiana_Supreme_Court). A board member of the [NAACP](/source/NAACP), and twice named [Sagamore of the Wabash](/source/Sagamore_of_the_Wabash), he was awarded an [honorary degree](/source/Honorary_degree) in [humane letters](/source/Humane_letters) from Indiana University, and later served as chairman of the [Indiana Historical Society](/source/Indiana_Historical_Society).[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
