'''Alan Ratcliffe''' (31 March 1909 – 21 August 1967) was an English [cricket](/source/cricket)er. Ratcliffe was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)). He was born in [Dulwich](/source/Dulwich), Surrey.

His early education was undertaken at [Rydal School](/source/Rydal_Penrhos),<ref name="OBIT">{{cite web|url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/228444.html|title=Obituaries in 1967|work=[Wisden Cricketers' Almanack](/source/Wisden_Cricketers'_Almanack)|date=4 December 2005 |publisher=ESPNcricinfo|accessdate=13 August 2011}}</ref>
Ratcliffe made his [first-class](/source/first-class_cricket) debut for [Wales](/source/Wales_cricket_team) against the touring [West Indians](/source/West_Indies_cricket_team) in 1928 scoring 71, facing the tourists' genuinely quick attack at Llandudno with confidence, hitting a six and 9 fours.<ref>{{Cite news |date=27 July 1928 |title=Wales v West Indies: Fine Innings by Rydal Schoolboy |work=The Manchester Guardian |pages=4}}</ref> He later made 3 further first-class appearances for Wales, the last of which came against the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) in 1930.<ref name="FCM">{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/32/32249/First-Class_Matches.html|title=First-Class Matches played by Alan Ratcliffe|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=13 August 2011}}</ref> He scored 227 runs for Wales, which came at an [average](/source/batting_average_(cricket)) of 32.42, with a high score of 73.<ref name="FCBAT">{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/32/32249/f_Batting_by_Team.html|title=First-class Batting and Fielding For Each Team by Alan Ratcliffe|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=13 August 2011}}</ref>

Ratcliffe undertook his studies at [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University) in 1930, it was in that same year that he made his debut for [Cambridge University Cricket Club](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) in a first-class match against [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_County_Cricket_Club), the same season in which he made his debut for [Denbighshire](/source/Denbighshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship), with him playing 4 further matches for the Welsh county up to 1931.<ref>{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/32/32249/Minor_Counties_Championship_Matches.html|title=Minor Counties Championship Matches played by Alan Ratcliffe|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=13 August 2011}}</ref> He represented Cambridge University in first-class cricket on another 32 occasions, with his final match for the university coming against [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) in 1932.<ref name="FCM"/> In his 33 first-class appearances, he scored 1,545 runs at an average of 30.29. He made 7 [fifties](/source/half_century) and 5 [centuries](/source/century_(cricket)), with a high score of 201.<ref name="FCBAT"/> This score, which was his only career double century, came against Oxford University at [Lord's](/source/Lord's).<ref>{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/13/13955.html|title=Oxford University v Cambridge University, 1931|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=13 August 2011}}</ref> This innings exceeded the highest score made in a [university match](/source/The_University_Match_(cricket)) by 29 runs, beating the previous high score held by [John Marsh](/source/John_Marsh_(cricketer%2C_born_1875)). This record though stood for only one day, as the next day the [Nawab of Pataudi](/source/Iftikhar_Ali_Khan_Pataudi) broke this record by scoring 238 [not out](/source/not_out) for Oxford University.<ref name="OBIT"/> While at Cambridge, he also made the first of first-class appearances for the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) against the [Army](/source/British_Army_cricket_team).<ref name="FCM"/>

His performances for Cambridge University caught the eyes of [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club), who signed him. He made his debut for Surrey midway through the [1932 season](/source/1932_English_cricket_season) against [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club). He made 6 further first-class appearances for Surrey, the last of which came against [Leicestershire](/source/Leicestershire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1933 County Championship](/source/1933_County_Championship).<ref name="FCM"/> His time at Surrey was less successful than his endeavours at Cambridge, with him scoring just 142 runs at an average of 17.75, with a high score of 34.<ref name="FCBAT"/> He left Surrey at the end of the [1933 season](/source/1933_English_cricket_season), later joining [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club) in 1937, making his debut for the county in that seasons Minor Counties Championship against [Bedfordshire](/source/Bedfordshire_County_Cricket_Club). He made 11 further appearances for Buckinghamshire, the last of which came against [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire_County_Cricket_Club) in 1939.<ref name="FCM"/> During this period, two further first-class appearances came for the Marylebone Cricket Club, in 1938 against Yorkshire and in Cambridge University in 1939. Following [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he made one further first-class appearance, for an Over-33 team against an Under-33 team at Lord's in 1945,<ref name="FCM"/> although this final appearance came with no success.<ref>{{cite web |url-access=subscription |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/17/17502.html|title=Over 33 v Under 33, 1945|publisher=CricketArchive|accessdate=13 August 2011}}</ref>
