Isaacman grew up in [Harrisburg, Pennsylvania](/source/Harrisburg%2C_Pennsylvania) and graduated from [Pennsylvania State University](/source/Pennsylvania_State_University) (earning a [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in 1964) and [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School) (earning a [J.D.](/source/Juris_Doctor) in 1967).<ref>{{Cite news |date=May 8, 1963 |title=College Notes |work=The Evening News |pages=5}}</ref>  In 1968, he was admitted to the [California State Bar](/source/California_State_Bar).  He also served as a law clerk to Judge [Harry Pregerson](/source/Harry_Pregerson) in the [United States District Court for the Central District of California](/source/United_States_District_Court_for_the_Central_District_of_California) from 1969 to 1970.

In 1988, he successfully argued the case ''[Hustler Magazine v. Falwell](/source/Hustler_Magazine_v._Falwell)'' before the [Supreme Court of the United States](/source/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States), which subsequently became a significant free speech case in the history of American jurisprudence.

== In fiction ==
Isaacman was played by actor [Edward Norton](/source/Edward_Norton) in the 1996 film ''[The People vs. Larry Flynt](/source/The_People_vs._Larry_Flynt).'' Some details in the film were fictionalized, including the scene showing Isaacman being wounded in the 1978 sniper shooting of Flynt. The actual lawyer who was shot was Gene Reeves, Jr., a Flynt attorney based in [Lawrenceville, Georgia](/source/Lawrenceville%2C_Georgia), where the shooting took place.
