# Alan Grose

[Vice Admiral](/source/Vice_Admiral_(Royal_Navy)) **Sir Alan Grose** [KBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) (born 24 September 1937) is a former [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) officer who became [Flag Officer, Plymouth](/source/Commander-in-Chief,_Plymouth).

## Naval career

Educated at [Strode's School](/source/Strode's_College) and the [Royal Naval College, Dartmouth](/source/Britannia_Royal_Naval_College), Grose joined the Royal Navy in 1957.[1] He became [commanding officer](/source/Commanding_officer) of the [frigate](/source/Frigate) [HMS *Eskimo*](/source/HMS_Eskimo_(F119)) in 1974 and of the [destroyer](/source/Destroyer) [HMS *Bristol*](/source/HMS_Bristol_(D23)) in 1980 commanding the latter ship in the [Falklands War](/source/Falklands_War).[2] He commanded the [aircraft carrier](/source/Aircraft_carrier) [HMS *Illustrious*](/source/HMS_Illustrious_(R06)) from 1984 until 1986, when he was succeeded by [Captain](/source/Captain_(naval)) [Peter Woodhead](/source/Peter_Woodhead).[1][3] He was appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Operational Requirements) at the [Ministry of Defence](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_(United_Kingdom)) in 1986, Flag Officer Third Flotilla in 1988 and [Flag Officer, Plymouth](/source/Commander-in-Chief,_Plymouth) and Admiral Superintendent at [Devonport](/source/HMNB_Devonport) in 1990 before retiring in 1992.[1]

In retirement he became Head of Security for [De Beers](/source/De_Beers).[4] He is also an Honorary Fellow of [Liverpool John Moores University](/source/Liverpool_John_Moores_University).[5]

## Family

In 1961 he married Gillian Ann Dymond; they had two sons and one daughter.[1]
