It is one of the most important residential and commercial areas of Lucknow and also one of the densely populated areas of the city. Alambagh falls in the [Lucknow Cantonment](/source/Lucknow_Cantonment_Assembly_constituency) constituency.

==History==

Earlier Alambagh contained a palace, a [mosque](/source/mosque) and other buildings, as well as a beautiful [garden](/source/garden).<ref name="EB1911">{{EB1911|inline=y|wstitle=Alambagh|volume=1|page=468}}</ref> Alambagh was converted into a fort in November 1857 during the [Indian mutiny of 1857](/source/Indian_Rebellion_of_1857).<ref name=Chambers>"Alambagh" in ''[Chambers's Encyclopædia](/source/Chambers's_Encyclop%C3%A6dia)''. London: [George Newnes](/source/George_Newnes_Ltd), 1961, Vol. 1, p. 212.</ref> The fort, under the command of [General Outram](/source/Sir_James_Outram%2C_1st_Baronet) was attacked repeatedly, but unsuccessfully until March 1858 when [Sir Colin Campbell](/source/Colin_Campbell%2C_1st_Baron_Clyde) returned to attack Lucknow.<ref>{{cite book |last=Porter |first=Maj Gen Whitworth |title=History of the Corps of Royal Engineers Vol I |year=1889 |publisher=The Institution of Royal Engineers |location=Chatham}}</ref>{{rp|489}} After the British defeated the mutineers it served as the military command center for Lucknow and the nearby towns.

==Present==
Alambagh is towards the south end of Lucknow and serves as a common market place for surrounding villages. Farmers from nearby villages visit Alambagh every morning to whole sell vegetables and crops to distributors and local retailers, who in turn distribute the vegetables and crops to retailers throughout Lucknow city.

==Transport==
Alambagh has the Alambagh bus depot. It is well connected to other parts of the city by [Kanpur](/source/Kanpur) road in south, [Sitapur](/source/Sitapur_district) road in west and roads built by the state government in other two directions. It also now has a [metro station](/source/Alambagh_metro_station) connecting to airport as well as railway station known as [Charbagh](/source/Lucknow_Charbagh_railway_station). [Autorickshaws](/source/Auto_rickshaw) and tempos are also a popular means of transport in Alambagh.
