A significant portion of State Route 9 is an unsigned designation for [U.S. Route 82](/source/U.S._Route_82_in_Alabama), [U.S. Route 231](/source/U.S._Route_231_in_Alabama), and [U.S. Route 331](/source/U.S._Route_331_in_Alabama). This article is about the standalone sections of SR 9.

**State Route 9** (**SR 9**) is one of the longest [state highways](/source/State_highway_(US)) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Alabama](/source/Alabama), spanning 149.59 miles (240.74 km). From the [Florida](/source/Florida) state line north to [Montgomery](/source/Montgomery,_Alabama), SR 9 is the unsigned partner route of [U.S. Route 331](/source/U.S._Route_331_in_Alabama) (US 331). As a signed route, the southern terminus of SR 9 is at its junction with [US 231](/source/U.S._Route_231_in_Alabama) and [SR 21](/source/Alabama_State_Route_21) at [Wetumpka](/source/Wetumpka,_Alabama), and the northern terminus of the route is at the [Georgia](/source/Georgia_(U.S._state)) state line east of [Cedar Bluff](/source/Cedar_Bluff,_Alabama), where the route becomes [State Route 20](/source/Georgia_State_Route_20) (SR 20).

## Route description

US 331 enters Alabama from Florida near the border town of [Florala](/source/Florala,_Alabama). The route is one of several routes used to connect Alabama and other northern settlements with the [Gulf of Mexico](/source/Gulf_of_Mexico) beaches in northwest Florida. From the state line to Montgomery, US 331 and SR 9 follow a north–south orientation. North of Montgomery, SR 9 as a standalone route assumes a more northeast–southwest orientation, and passes through rural areas and small towns in the eastern part of the state.
