**Alfred James Reach** (May 25, 1840 – January 14, 1928) was an Anglo-American sportsman who was one of the early stars of [baseball](/source/Baseball) in the [National Association](/source/National_Association_of_Professional_Base_Ball_Players). After his playing career, he went on to become an influential executive, publisher, sporting goods manufacturer, and spokesman for the sport. He was influential in the founding of the [Philadelphia Phillies](/source/Philadelphia_Phillies) in 1875.

## Early life

Reach was born in [London](/source/London), on May 25, 1840.[1]

## Career

Reach was a regular for the champion [Eckford](/source/Eckford_of_Brooklyn) club in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn) in the early 1860s before moving to the [Philadelphia Athletics](/source/Philadelphia_Athletics_(1860%E2%80%931876)) in 1865.[1] When the National Association began, he helped them win the first professional baseball pennant in 1871.[2]

Upon his retirement from playing in 1875, he helped found the [Philadelphia Phillies](/source/Philadelphia_Phillies) franchise. Reach served as team president from 1883 to 1899.[1] Later, similarly to [Albert Spalding](/source/Albert_Spalding), Reach formed a sporting goods company and earned millions. In fact, he sold his company to [Spalding](/source/Spalding_(company)) in 1889.[1] Reach was the trade name used on the game balls for the [American League](/source/American_League) until 1976.

Reach kept his interest in the Phillies franchise, selling to a syndicate led by [James Potter](/source/James_Potter_(baseball)) in 1903.[3]

## Death

Reach died at age 87 in [Atlantic City, New Jersey](/source/Atlantic_City%2C_New_Jersey), and is interred at [West Laurel Hill Cemetery](/source/West_Laurel_Hill_Cemetery) in [Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania](/source/Bala_Cynwyd%2C_Pennsylvania).

## Legacy

A [Pennsylvania historical marker](/source/Pennsylvania_historical_markers) was dedicated on April 4, 2003 at 1820 [Chestnut Street](/source/Chestnut_Street_(Philadelphia)) in [Philadelphia](/source/List_of_Pennsylvania_state_historical_markers_in_Philadelphia_County) for Reach's contribution to baseball.[4]
