Montgomery and his [Hartford Chiefs](/source/Hartford_Chiefs) teammate Ralph Younkers were involved in a fatal three-car accident on [U.S. Route&nbsp;460](/source/U.S._Route_460_in_Virginia) in [Waverly, Virginia](/source/Waverly%2C_Virginia) on April 26, 1942. Younkers was killed instantly while Montgomery died at a hospital in [Petersburg, Virginia](/source/Petersburg%2C_Virginia).
