**Aloysius Tyrone Foster** (January 18, 1943 – May 28, 2025) was an American [jazz](/source/Jazz) drummer. Foster's professional career began in the mid-1960s, when he played and recorded with [hard bop](/source/Hard_bop) and [swing](/source/Swing_music) musicians including [Blue Mitchell](/source/Blue_Mitchell) and [Illinois Jacquet](/source/Illinois_Jacquet). Foster played [jazz fusion](/source/Jazz_fusion) with [Miles Davis](/source/Miles_Davis) during the 70s and was one of the few people to have contact with Davis during his retirement from 1975 to 1980. During Davis's retirement, Foster continued to play and record acoustic jazz with [Sonny Rollins](/source/Sonny_Rollins), [Dexter Gordon](/source/Dexter_Gordon), [McCoy Tyner](/source/McCoy_Tyner), [Horace Silver](/source/Horace_Silver), and other band leaders. Foster played on Miles Davis's 1981 comeback album *[The Man with the Horn](/source/The_Man_with_the_Horn)*, and was the only musician to play in Davis's band both before, and after, his retirement. After leaving Davis's band in the mid-1980s, Foster toured and recorded with [Herbie Hancock](/source/Herbie_Hancock), [Sonny Rollins](/source/Sonny_Rollins), [Joe Henderson](/source/Joe_Henderson), and many other band leaders, primarily working in acoustic jazz settings. Foster also released several solo albums under his own name, starting with *Mixed Roots* in 1978.

## Life and career

Foster was born in [Richmond, Virginia](/source/Richmond%2C_Virginia), United States,[2] and grew up in New York. He began playing drums at the age of 13 and made his recording debut on [Blue Mitchell](/source/Blue_Mitchell)'s 1964 album, *[The Thing to Do](/source/The_Thing_to_Do_(album))*, at the age of 20.[2]

He joined [Miles Davis](/source/Miles_Davis)'s group when [Jack DeJohnette](/source/Jack_DeJohnette) left in 1972,[3] and played with Davis until 1985.[2] In his 1989 autobiography, Davis described the first time he heard Foster play live in 1972 at the Cellar Club in [Manhattan](/source/Manhattan): "He [Foster] knocked me out because he had such a groove and he would just lay it right in there. That was the kind of thing I was looking for. Al could set it up for everybody else to play off and just keep the groove going forever."

Foster began composing in the 1970s, and toured with his own band, including musicians such as bassist [Doug Weiss](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Doug_Weiss_(musician)&action=edit&redlink=1), saxophonist [Dayna Stephens](/source/Dayna_Stephens), and pianist [Adam Birnbaum](/source/Adam_Birnbaum). The last decade of his life Foster was frequently at the New York club [Smoke](/source/Smoke_(jazz_club)) whose [Smoke Sessions](/source/Smoke_Sessions_Records) label released his final two albums.[4]

Foster died after an illness on May 28, 2025, at the age of 82.[5]
