**Al Ewing** (/ˈjuːɪŋ/ YOO-ing; born 12 August 1977) is a [British](/source/People_of_the_United_Kingdom) [comics writer](/source/Comics_writer) who has mainly worked in the [small press](/source/British_small_press_comics), for *[2000 AD](/source/2000_AD_(comics))*, and for [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics).

## Career

Al Ewing began his career writing stories in the four-page *[Future Shocks](/source/Future_Shocks)* format for *[2000 AD](/source/2000_AD_(comics))* and moved on to regular stints on *[Judge Dredd](/source/Judge_Dredd)*[1] (2008–2015), for which his 2010 story "Doctor What?" marked [Brendan McCarthy](/source/Brendan_McCarthy)'s return to *2000 AD*. They later worked together on a new series entitled *The Zaucer of Zilk*.[2][3] Ewing worked on *Damnation Station* and *[Zombo](/source/Zombo_(character))*, the latter illustrated by [Henry Flint](/source/Henry_Flint), which was collected in [trade paperback](/source/Trade_paperback_(comics)) in 2010.

Ewing has also contributed to *[Solar Wind](/source/Solar_Wind_(comic))*, *[FutureQuake](/source/FutureQuake)*, and *[The End Is Nigh](/source/The_End_Is_Nigh_(fanzine))*. He created the [mobile comic](/source/Mobile_comic) *[Murderdrome](/source/Murderdrome)* with [P. J. Holden](/source/P._J._Holden).

In May 2007, Ewing created the comedy blog "The Diary of Ralph Dibny", writing as the titular [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) superhero (also known as [Elongated Man](/source/Elongated_Man)), Dibny's therapist, or as the even more obscure DC hero [Richard Dragon](/source/Richard_Dragon), as they react to the events of each week's issue of the comic book *[52](/source/52_(comics))*.[4]

Breaking into [American comic books](/source/American_comic_book), Ewing was also picked by [Garth Ennis](/source/Garth_Ennis) to provide a six-issue arc on *Jennifer Blood*, published by [Dynamite Entertainment](/source/Dynamite_Entertainment),[5][6] and a spin-off series *The Ninjettes*.[7]

His debut prose novel *[Pax Britannia: El Sombra](/source/Pax_Britannia:_El_Sombra)*, published by [Abaddon Books](/source/Abaddon_Books) in 2007, features a mysterious Mexican hero fighting back against the menace of steam-powered Nazis.[8] It is set in the same [steampunk](/source/Steampunk) alternate history as the other novels from the *Pax Britannia* series. Three other novels have been published since, with a fifth on the way.

Ewing wrote *[Mighty Avengers](/source/Mighty_Avengers)* and *[Loki: Agent of Asgard](/source/Loki:_Agent_of_Asgard)* for [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics)[9] and co-wrote the first year of the Eleventh Doctor *Doctor Who* title with [Rob Williams](/source/Rob_Williams_(comics)) for [Titan Comics](/source/Titan_Comics).[10]

Ewing has since written *[New Avengers](/source/New_Avengers)*, *[U.S.Avengers](/source/U.S.Avengers)*, *[Ultimates](/source/Ultimates_(2015))*, *[Rocket](/source/Rocket_Raccoon)*, *[Royals](/source/Inhumans)*, and *[The Immortal Hulk](/source/The_Immortal_Hulk)*, all for Marvel. *The Immortal Hulk* was a nominee for the 2019 [Eisner Award](/source/Eisner_Award) in the "Best Continuing Series" category,[11] and had earned publisher Marvel Comics a Diamond Gem Award the previous year as "Best New Comic Book Series."[12]

In 2021, Ewing won the [GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book](/source/GLAAD_Media_Award_for_Outstanding_Comic_Book) at the [32nd GLAAD Media Awards](/source/32nd_GLAAD_Media_Awards) for his work on *[Empyre](/source/Empyre)* and received an additional nomination in 2021 and one in 2022 for *[Guardians of the Galaxy](/source/Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_(2008_team))*.[13] In June 2021, it was announced that Ewing would serve as co-writer of [*Venom*](/source/Venom_(comic_book)) [(vol. 5)](/source/Venom_(vol._5)) alongside [Ram V](/source/Ram_V), with [Bryan Hitch](/source/Bryan_Hitch) serving as the initial artist and the series launching in November that same year.[14]

During Marvel's [Krakoan Age](/source/Krakoan_Age), Ewing was the writer on several X-Men titles such as the [ongoing](/source/Ongoing_series) series *[S.W.O.R.D.](/source/S.W.O.R.D.#S.W.O.R.D._volume_2)* (2020–2021), the flagship series *[X-Men Red](/source/X-Men_Red#Volume_2)* (2022–2023) and the [limited series](/source/Limited_series_(comics)) *[Resurrection of Magneto](/source/Resurrection_of_Magneto)* (2024).[15][16][17][18] In May 2023, it was announced that Ewing would write *[The Immortal Thor](/source/The_Immortal_Thor)*, with Martín Cóccolo serving as artist and debuting in August that same year.[19]

In July 2024, it was announced at [San Diego Comic-Con](/source/San_Diego_Comic-Con) that Ewing would contribute to the [Absolute Universe](/source/Absolute_Universe) at [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) by penning the series *[Absolute Green Lantern](/source/Absolute_Green_Lantern)*, with Jahnoy Lindsay serving as artist and set for release in 2025.[20] In August 2024, it was announced that Ewing would be working together with artist Carlos Gomez for the series [*Venom* vol. 6: *All-New Venom*](/source/Venom_(vol._6)). The series follows [Dylan Brock](/source/Dylan_Brock) in the aftermath of the [Venom War](/source/Venom_War) trying to discover who Venom's new host is, with the first issue set to begin publication in December.[21] In September 2024, it was announced that Ewing would pen the ongoing series *[Metamorpho: The Element Man](/source/Metamorpho:_The_Element_Man)* with [Steve Lieber](/source/Steve_Lieber) illustrating and set to debut in December that same year.[22]

## Personal life

Ewing has a brother, Tom Ewing, who writes critical essays on music and pop culture. He created the website *[Freaky Trigger](/source/Freaky_Trigger)*,[23] to which Al was an occasional contributor in its early days.[24]

At the end of [Pride Month](/source/Pride_Month) 2021, Ewing [came out](/source/Came_out) as [bisexual](/source/Bisexual).[25]
