The **al-Bahr Mosque** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): مسجد البحر, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Arabic): *Masjid al-Bahr*, [lit.](/source/Literal_translation) 'The Sea Mosque'; [Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): מסגד הים, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Hebrew): *Misgad HaYam*), is the oldest extant [mosque](/source/Mosque) in the [historical part](/source/Old_Jaffa) of [Jaffa](/source/Jaffa), in greater [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv), in the [Tel Aviv District](/source/Tel_Aviv_District) of [Israel](/source/Israel).

## Overview

Built in 1675 [CE](/source/Common_Era),[1] the mosque is situated on the HaAliya HaShniya Street near the harbour. Due to its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, fishermen and sailors used the mosque, as well as nearby inhabitants of the surrounding area.[2] Built by the ['Azza](/source/'Azza) /Alazzeh family as inscribed in stone above the entrance next to the [Basmala](/source/Basmala).[3]
