He directed and co-wrote the short film "I'm in the corner with the bluebells", part of the international shorts competition at the [2014 Toronto International Film Festival](/source/2014_Toronto_International_Film_Festival). Mitchell played "Klook" in ''Klook’s Last Stand'' at London's Park Theatre, where he received an Off West End Awards Best Actor nomination. He also recently played British actor [Lenny Henry's](/source/Lenny_Henry) brother in ''[Fences](/source/Fences_(play))'' in the West End. Mitchell has also worked at London's Donmar Warehouse and played opposite [Patina Miller](/source/Patina_Miller) in ''[Sister Act](/source/Sister_Act_(musical))'' at The [London Palladium](/source/London_Palladium).

In December 2017 he played "Nicely-Nicely Johnson" in ''[Guys and Dolls](/source/Guys_and_Dolls)'' at the [Royal Exchange](/source/Royal_Exchange%2C_Manchester), Manchester. The production was directed by [Michael Buffong](/source/Michael_Buffong).

On 9 December 2020, he played "Papa Who" in NBC's live production of [Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Musical!](/source/Dr._Seuss'_The_Grinch_Musical_Live!) alongside
[Matthew Morrison](/source/Matthew_Morrison), [Denis O'Hare](/source/Denis_O'Hare), [Booboo Stewart](/source/Booboo_Stewart) and Amelia Minto, who played [The Grinch](/source/Grinch), [Old Max](/source/Max_the_Dog), Young Max and [Cindy Lou Who](/source/Cindy_Lou_Who), respectively.
