He completed his [B.Tech](/source/Bachelor_of_Technology) degree in [mechanical engineering](/source/Mechanical_engineering) from [IIT Roorkee](/source/IIT_Roorkee) and his [MBA](/source/Master_in_Business_Administration) degree from [Ateneo de Manila University](/source/Ateneo_de_Manila_University) in [Philippines](/source/Philippines).[4] ## Civil Service career Seth has worked in various positions in the [Government of Karnataka](/source/Government_of_Karnataka) as [Principal Secretary](/source/Principal_Secretary_(India)) of Infrastructure Development, Urban Development and Planning department in [Government of Karnataka](/source/Government_of_Karnataka).[5] Between 2000 and 2004 Seth was the Deputy Secretary in [Department of Expenditure](/source/Ministry_of_Finance_(India)#Department_of_Expenditure) and in [Department of Economic Affairs](/source/Ministry_of_Finance_(India)#Department_of_Economic_Affairs) in [Ministry of Finance](/source/Ministry_of_Finance_(India)) [Government of India](/source/Government_of_India). From 2004 to 2008 he was an advisor to the executive director at [Asian Development Bank](/source/Asian_Development_Bank).[6] He then was the chief secretary in health and family welfare ministry and commissioner of Commercial Taxes in [Government of Karnataka](/source/Government_of_Karnataka). As commissner of Commercial Tax department of Karnataka Government his tenure was known for transforming the Commercial Tax administration for which he got the [Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Enterprises](/source/Orders,_decorations,_and_medals_of_India#Other_national_awards) in 2013.[7][8] In July 2018 he was appointed as the [managing director](/source/Managing_director) of [Bangalore Metro Railway Corporation Ltd](/source/Namma_Metro) where he worked until April 2021.[9] In April 2021, the Government of India appointed Ajay Seth as the [Economic Affairs Secretary of India](/source/Secretary_to_the_Government_of_India), his return to Central Government after a gap of 13 years.[10] In March 2025, the Government appointed Seth as the new [Finance Secretary of India](/source/Finance_Secretary_of_India) after the departure of [Tuhin Kanta Pandey](/source/Tuhin_Kanta_Pandey) to take up the role as Chairman of [SEBI](/source/SEBI).[11] After stepping down from both of his previous posts, Ajay Seth took over the office as the chairman of the [Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority](/source/Insurance_Regulatory_and_Development_Authority) for a period of 3 years, starting on 1 September 2025.[12] ## References 1.
