**Ainthorpe** is a village in the [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) of [Danby](/source/Danby,_North_Yorkshire) in the county of [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England. It is situated within the [North York Moors National Park](/source/North_York_Moors_National_Park) in the [Esk Valley](/source/River_Esk,_North_Yorkshire), a quarter of a mile south of [Danby](/source/Danby,_North_Yorkshire) and 12 miles (19 km) west of [Whitby](/source/Whitby).[1][2]

## Governance

The village lies within the [Scarborough and Whitby](/source/Scarborough_and_Whitby_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) Parliament constituency.

From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the [Borough of Scarborough](/source/Borough_of_Scarborough). It is now administered by the unitary [North Yorkshire Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_Council).

The village is part of the Danby Parish Group, which includes [Castleton](/source/Castleton,_North_Yorkshire), [Westerdale](/source/Westerdale), [Fryup](/source/Fryup) and [Houlsyke](/source/Houlsyke).[3]

## Community

The village hosts the Danby Church of England (VC) school, located on Ainthorpe Lane.[4] Built by [William Butterfield](/source/William_Butterfield) in 1860, it is a Grade II listed building.[5]

There is a 16th-century [hotel](/source/Hotel), the *Fox & Hounds Inn*, in the village.[6]
