# Aiantis

**Aiantis** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Αἰαντίς) was a [phyle](/source/Phyle) of ancient [Attica](/source/Attica) with six [demes](/source/Deme):[1] [Aphidna](/source/Aphidna), [Marathon](/source/Marathon%2C_Greece), [Oenoe](/source/Oenoe_(Marathon)), [Rhamnous](/source/Rhamnous), [Tricorythus](/source/Tricorythus) and [Phalerum](/source/Phalerum).[2] It was named in honour of [Ajax the Great](/source/Ajax_the_Great).

Ruins of [Rhamnous](/source/Rhamnous), a *deme* of the Aiantis.

[Marathon](/source/Marathon%2C_Greece) is located within the boundaries of this place.[3]

It is attested by [Plutarch](/source/Plutarch) that fifty-two members of the tribe of Aiantis died from wounds sustained in the [Battle of Plataea](/source/Battle_of_Plataea).[4]

The playwright [Aeschylus](/source/Aeschylus) came from deme Eleusis in Aiantis.[5] His family were [eupatrids](/source/Eupatrid).[6]
