**Agra district** (aːgɾaː) is one of the 75 [districts](/source/Districts_of_Uttar_Pradesh) in the northern [Indian](/source/India) [state](/source/States_and_territories_of_India) of [Uttar Pradesh](/source/Uttar_Pradesh). The district headquarters is the historical city of [Agra](/source/Agra). Agra district is a part of [Agra division](/source/Agra_division).

## Geography

The district lies in the cultural region of [Braj](/source/Braj). Agra district is bounded by [Mathura district](/source/Mathura_district) on the north, [Dholpur district](/source/Dholpur_district) of [Rajasthan](/source/Rajasthan) state on the south, [Firozabad district](/source/Firozabad_district) on the east and [Bharatpur district](/source/Bharatpur_district) of [Rajasthan](/source/Rajasthan) on the west. The area of the district is 4,027 km2.

## Administration

[Agra division](/source/Agra_division) which consists of four districts, and is headed by the [divisional commissioner](/source/Divisional_commissioner_(India)) of Agra, who is an [IAS officer](/source/Indian_Administrative_Service), the commissioner is the head of local government institutions (including [municipal corporations](/source/Municipal_corporation)) in the division, is in charge of infrastructure development in his division, and is also responsible for maintaining law and order in the division.[3][4][5][6] The [district magistrate](/source/District_collector_(India)) of Agra reports to the divisional commissioner.

Agra district administration is headed by the [district magistrate and collector](/source/District_collector_(India)) (DM) of Agra, who is an [IAS officer](/source/Indian_Administrative_Service). [The DM](/source/District_collector) is in charge of property records and revenue collection for the central government and oversees the [elections](/source/Elections_in_India) held in the city. [The DM](/source/District_collector) is also responsible for maintaining law and order in the city.[3][7][8][9] The DM is assisted by a chief development officer; six additional district magistrates for finance/revenue, city, administration, land acquisition, civil supply, and protocol; one city magistrate; and three additional city magistrates.[10]

Agra district comprises 6 [tehsils](/source/Tehsil). The tehsils are [Etmadpur](/source/Etmadpur), [Agra](/source/Agra), [Kiraoli](/source/Kiraoli), [Kheragarh](/source/Kheragarh), [Fatehabad](/source/Fatehabad,_Agra) and [Bah](/source/Bah). The headquarters of the district is [Agra](/source/Agra) city. The district consists of 15 [blocks](/source/Block_(country_subdivision)), namely [Etmadpur](/source/Etmadpur), [Khandauli](/source/Khandauli), [Shamsabad](/source/Shamsabad,_Agra), [Fatehabad](/source/Fatehabad,_Agra), [Jagner](/source/Jagner), [Kheragarh](/source/Kheragarh), [Saiyan](/source/Saiyan,_Agra), [Achhnera](/source/Achhnera), [Akola](/source/Akola,_Agra), [Bichpuri](/source/Bichpuri), [Fatehpur Sikri](/source/Fatehpur_Sikri), [Barauli Ahir](/source/Barauli_Ahir), [Bah](/source/Bah), [Pinahat](/source/Pinahat) and [Jaitpur Kalan](/source/Jaitpur_Kalan).[11]

The division comprises 2 constituencies namely [Agra](/source/Agra) and [Fatehpur Sikri](/source/Fatehpur_Sikri). There are 9 [Vidhan Sabha](/source/Vidhan_Sabha) constituencies in the district. They are [Bah](/source/Bah), Fatehabad, [Etmadpur](/source/Etmadpur), [Dayal Bagh](/source/Dayal_Bagh), [Agra Cantonment](/source/Agra_Cantonment), Agra North, Agra South, [Kheragarh](/source/Kheragarh) and [Fatehpur Sikri](/source/Fatehpur_Sikri), [Awagarh](/source/Awagarh) and [Jalesar](/source/Jalesar) in [Etah District](/source/Etah_district).

According to the [2011 census](/source/2011_census_of_India) Agra district has a [population](/source/Demographics_of_India) of 4,418,797,[1] roughly equal to the nation of [Moldova](/source/Moldova)[13] or the US state of [Kentucky](/source/Kentucky).[14] This gives it a ranking of 41st in India (out of a total of [640](/source/Districts_of_India)).[1] The district has a population density of 1,084 PD/sqkm [1] Hindus are 88.77% and Muslims are 9.30% in Agra district.[15] Its [population growth rate](/source/Family_planning_in_India) over the decade 2001-2011 was 21%.[1] Agra has a [sex ratio](/source/Human_sex_ratio) of 859 [females](/source/Women_in_India) for every 1000 males,[1] and a [literacy rate](/source/Literacy_in_India) of 69.44%. 45.81% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes made up 22.43% of the population.[1]

Hindus are the majority population in the district, and predominate in rural areas. A large number of people did not state their religion during the census, and there are significant populations of Jains, Sikhs and Christians in Agra city.[16]

At the time of the [2011 Census of India](/source/2011_Census_of_India), 97.38% of the population spoke [Hindi](/source/Hindi) and 1.27% [Braj Bhasha](/source/Braj_Bhasha) as their first language.[17]

The language of Agra is [Braj Bhasha](/source/Braj_Bhasha), which is a [Western Hindi](/source/Western_Hindi) language, predominant in the nebulous [Braj](/source/Braj) region centred on [Mathura](/source/Mathura,_Uttar_Pradesh) and [Agra](/source/Agra) in [Uttar Pradesh](/source/Uttar_Pradesh) and [Dholpur](/source/Dholpur) & [Bharatpur](/source/Bharatpur,_Rajasthan) in [Rajasthan](/source/Rajasthan). It is the predominant language in the central stretch of the Ganges-Yamuna [Doab](/source/Doab).
