The '''Aganainae''' are a small [subfamily](/source/subfamilies) of [moth](/source/moth)s in the family [Erebidae](/source/Erebidae). The adults and caterpillars of this subfamily are typically large and brightly colored, like the related [tiger moths](/source/Arctiinae_(erebid_moths)). Many of the caterpillars feed on poisonous host plants and acquire toxic [cardenolide](/source/cardenolide)s that make them unpleasant to predators. Like the closely related [litter moth](/source/litter_moth)s, the adults have long, upturned [labial palp](/source/labial_palp)s, and the caterpillars have fully or mostly developed [proleg](/source/proleg)s on the abdomen. The Aganainae are distributed across the [tropics](/source/tropics) and [subtropics](/source/subtropics) of the [Old World](/source/Old_World).<ref name="Z+2011">{{cite journal|last1=Zahiri|first1=Reza|title=Molecular phylogenetics of Erebidae (Lepidoptera, Noctuoidea)|journal=Systematic Entomology|date=2011|doi=10.1111/j.1365-3113.2011.00607.x|display-authors=etal|volume=37|pages=102–124|s2cid=84249695 |doi-access=free}}</ref>

==Taxonomy==
The subfamily was formerly placed in the families [Noctuidae](/source/Noctuidae) and [Arctiidae](/source/Arctiidae) by some authors. Other authors ranked it as a family by the names Aganaidae or Hypsidae. Recent phylogenetic studies have shown that the Aganainae are most closely related to the [Herminiinae](/source/Herminiinae) (litter moths), and this pair of subfamilies is most closely related to the [Arctiinae](/source/Arctiinae_(erebid_moths)) (tiger and lichen moths), all within the family [Erebidae](/source/Erebidae).<ref name="Z+2011" /><ref>{{cite journal|last1=Lafontaine|first1=Donald|last2=Schmidt|first2=Christian|title=Annotated check list of the Noctuoidea (Insecta, Lepidoptera) of North America north of Mexico|journal=ZooKeys|date=19 Mar 2010|issue=40 |page=26|doi=10.3897/zookeys.40.414|url=http://publication.plazi.org/id/9A5EDE4DFFE4FF940505F942926EFFF4|ref=L&S2010|doi-access=free}}</ref>
