# Afterplay

***Afterplay*** is a 2002 [one-act play](/source/One-act_play) by [Brian Friel](/source/Brian_Friel). It centres on two characters from Chekhov (Sonya from *[Uncle Vanya](/source/Uncle_Vanya)* and Andrey from *[Three Sisters](/source/Three_Sisters_(play))*) meeting in Moscow in the 1920s.

It premiered at the [Gate Theatre](/source/Gate_Theatre) in Dublin in 2002.[1] It has been revived at the [Gielgud Theatre](/source/Gielgud_Theatre) in 2002, directed by Robin Lefevre and starring [John Hurt](/source/John_Hurt) (Andrey) and [Penelope Wilton](/source/Penelope_Wilton) (Sonja)[2][3][4] the [King's Theatre, Edinburgh](/source/King's_Theatre,_Edinburgh) and in 2009, starring [Frances Barber](/source/Frances_Barber) and [Niall Buggy](/source/Niall_Buggy). The reviewer of the 2009 production wrote: "...in Friel's vision, in which Andrey and Sonya meet by chance, the emotional trauma of distant events weighs heavily."[5] The Studio space at the [Crucible Theatre](/source/Crucible_Theatre) production in 2014 starred [Niamh Cusack](/source/Niamh_Cusack) (Sonja) and [Sean Gallagher](/source/Sean_Gallagher_(actor)) (Andrey).[6][7]

The play premiered in New York at the [Off Broadway](/source/Off_Broadway) [Irish Repertory Theatre](/source/Irish_Repertory_Theatre) on 2 October 2016 in a limited engagement to 6 November 2016. Directed by Joe Dowling, the play stars [Dermot Crowley](/source/Dermot_Crowley) and [Dearbhla Molloy](/source/Dearbhla_Molloy). *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)* reviewer wrote: "Their dialogue sounds extemporaneous, their monologues genuine and heartfelt. Each listens to the other with visible compassion."[8]
