**Aero Research Limited** (**ARL**) was a British company that pioneered several new [adhesives](/source/Adhesives), intended initially for the [aeronautical](/source/Aeronautics) industry.

Formed in [1934](/source/1934_in_aviation) by [Norman de Bruyne](/source/Norman_de_Bruyne) at [Duxford](/source/Duxford), [Cambridgeshire](/source/Cambridgeshire) from an earlier company of his, the Cambridgeshire Aeroplane Construction Company, ARL started a long-term relationship with the [de Havilland](/source/De_Havilland) company by initially working on reinforced [phenol](/source/Phenol)-[formaldehyde](/source/Formaldehyde) resins for use in [variable pitch](/source/Controllable_pitch_propeller) [propellers](/source/Propeller_(aircraft)). This material, being lighter than [aluminium alloys](/source/Aluminium_alloy), offered much-reduced [centrifugal loads](/source/Centrifugal_force) on the hub bearings.

This was followed by work on [synthetic](/source/Chemical_synthesis) [urea-formaldehyde](/source/Urea-formaldehyde) adhesives and led to the [Aerolite](/source/Aerolite_(adhesive)) range of [wood](/source/Wood) glues, used on the [Horsa](/source/Airspeed_Horsa) glider and the [de Havilland Mosquito](/source/De_Havilland_Mosquito) fast bomber and later, fighter.

ARL was responsible for developing a number of aeronautical-related adhesives, including [Aerolite 306](/source/Aerolite_(adhesive)), Aerodux 500, [Redux](/source/Redux_(adhesive)) - a metal-to-wood, metal-to-metal adhesive, used on the de Havilland [Hornet](/source/De_Havilland_Hornet) and [Comet](/source/De_Havilland_Comet), and the [epoxy resin](/source/Epoxy_resin) [Araldite](/source/Araldite). Other products included its Aeroweb [honeycomb](/source/Composite_honeycomb) core, and Fibrelam panels.

ARL was later sold to [Ciba](/source/Novartis) in 1947 and its range of products later marketed under the Ciba (ARL) name.
