== Description ==
''Adyte hyalina'' is colourless or yellowish, up to thirty millimetres long, and has a dark band running down its back.<ref name=CPG>John Barrett and C M Young, Collins Pocket Guide to the Sea Shore (1958) p.68</ref> ''Adyte hyalina'' is a long-bodied scale-worm with up to about 70 segments and 15 pairs of [elytra](/source/elytra), leaving the long tail uncovered. The [prostomium](/source/prostomium) is rounded anteriorly (without peaks) and with three [antennae](/source/Antenna_(biology)); the lateral antennae are inserted ventrally to the median antenna. [Parapodia](/source/Parapodia) with elongate acicular lobes are present, with both [acicula](/source/acicula) penetrating the [epidermis](/source/epidermis) in notopodium but not neuropodium. The [notochaetae](/source/Chaeta) are stout, with few rows of spines and slightly notched tip. The [neurochaetae](/source/Chaeta) are more slender and more numerous, have faint rows of spines distally, and feature minutely [bidentate](/source/bidentate) or [simple (unidentate)](/source/unidentate) tips.<ref name=bock2010/>

==Distribution==
The species is found in the [Pacific](/source/Pacific), [Indian](/source/Indian_Ocean) and [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean), the [Mediterranean Sea](/source/Mediterranean_Sea), the [Red Sea](/source/Red_Sea) and the [Bosporus](/source/Bosporus), the [English Channel](/source/English_Channel) and the [North Sea](/source/North_Sea).<ref name=Msip>[http://species-identification.org/species.php?species_group=macrobenthos_polychaeta&id=404 Marine species identification portal]</ref>

==Biology==
The species is widely distributed round the shores of [Britain](/source/Great_Britain) where it is found on the lower shore and always in association with the sea urchin, ''[Echinus esculentus](/source/Echinus_esculentus)'', among whose spines it lives.<ref name=CPG/> It ranges from the [littoral](/source/littoral) to the [sublittoral](/source/sublittoral) zones and is often associated with [starfish](/source/starfish), [brittle star](/source/brittle_star)s and [feather stars](/source/Crinoid).<ref name=Msip/> It is an omnivore and both a scavenger and a predator.<ref name=read/>
