Adolphe and Leon both gained early experience of orchestral playing in Merseyside orchestras, including the Akeroyd Orchestra and the [Oxton](/source/Oxton%2C_Merseyside) Orchestral Society in [Birkenhead](/source/Birkenhead), conducted at that time by James Matthews, deputy leader of the [Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra](/source/Liverpool_Philharmonic_Orchestra).<ref>Bertram Benas. He was there from May 1912 until December 1913, and then began playing in professional orchestras. He spent a summer season at [Torquay](/source/Torquay) in a brass band conducted by [Basil Cameron](/source/Basil_Cameron), and then joined the [Scottish Orchestra](/source/Royal_Scottish_National_Orchestra) in [Glasgow](/source/Glasgow) under [Emil Mlynarski](/source/Emil_M%C5%82ynarski).<ref name=r/> He was also starting to compose.<ref>Adolphe Goossens. While in Glasgow he signed up to join the British Army (the [Artists Rifles](/source/Artists_Rifles)) on an impulse, and was quickly posted to France.
