# Adolf Kiessling

German classical philologist (1837–1893)

**Adolf Kiessling** (15 February 1837 – 3 May 1893) was a German [philologist](/source/Philologist) born in [Culm](/source/Che%C5%82mno) (present-day [Chełmno](/source/Che%C5%82mno), [Poland](/source/Poland)). He was a specialist in the field of [Roman literature](/source/Roman_literature).[1]

## Biography

He obtained his classical education at the [University of Bonn](/source/University_of_Bonn) as a student of [Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker](/source/Friedrich_Gottlieb_Welcker), [Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl](/source/Friedrich_Wilhelm_Ritschl), [Franz Bücheler](/source/Franz_B%C3%BCcheler) and [Otto Jahn](/source/Otto_Jahn). In 1863, he became a professor of [classical philology](/source/Classical_philology) at the [University of Basel](/source/University_of_Basel), and in 1869 began teaching classes at the *[Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums](/source/Gelehrtenschule_des_Johanneums)* in [Hamburg](/source/Hamburg). In 1872 he relocated to the [University of Greifswald](/source/University_of_Greifswald), where from a scientific standpoint, he spent the most important years of his life. In 1889 he became successor to [Friedrich Leo](/source/Friedrich_Leo) (1851–1914) at the [University of Strasbourg](/source/University_of_Strasbourg).[1]

## Works

Kiessling's research largely dealt with critiques and commentaries of ancient classical texts. His best written effort being an extensive commentary on the works of [Horace](/source/Horace), a work that appeared in three volumes from 1884 to 1889, and after Kiessling's death, was edited by [Richard Heinze](/source/Richard_Heinze) (1867–1929).

He also explained and critiqued the writings of the historian [Ammianus Marcellinus](/source/Ammianus_Marcellinus), the philosopher [Seneca](/source/Seneca_the_Younger), the playwright [Plautus](/source/Plautus) and the poets [Catullus](/source/Catullus) and [Propertius](/source/Propertius).[1] Other noted published works by Kiessling include:
