== Life and career ==
Goetzberger studied physics in [Munich](/source/Munich), Germany. He finished his university studies with a work over ''Über die Kristallisation aufgedampfter Antimonschichten''. He worked together with [William Shockley](/source/William_Shockley) in [Palo Alto](/source/Palo_Alto%2C_California), California and for company [Bell Labs](/source/Bell_Labs).  In 1981, Goetzberger founded [Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE](/source/Fraunhofer_Institute_for_Solar_Energy_Systems_ISE) in [Freiburg im Breisgau](/source/Freiburg_im_Breisgau).<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.epo.org/learning-events/european-inventor/finalists/2009/goetzberger.html|title=The Sun God|first=European Patent|last=Office|website=www.epo.org}}</ref>
