**Adam Rigby** is an English [wheelchair rugby league](/source/Wheelchair_rugby_league) player and referee who plays for [Wigan Warriors](/source/Wigan_Warriors_Wheelchair) in the [RFL Wheelchair Super League](/source/RFL_Wheelchair_Super_League). He is a former [England](/source/England_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) international, having retired internationally in May 2025.[1][2][3]

## Background

Adam Rigby is a disabled [wheelchair rugby league](/source/Wheelchair_rugby_league) player who was born with [hereditary spastic paraplegia](/source/Hereditary_spastic_paraplegia) affecting joint mobility in his hips, knees, and ankles. As such he is a full time wheelchair user.[4]

## Career

### Club

Rigby scored for Wigan Warriors in the club's inaugural Grand Final appearance in [2023](/source/2023_RFL_Wheelchair_Super_League), defeating [Leeds Rhinos](/source/Leeds_Rhinos_Wheelchair) 50–42 to win the club's first title.[5] The following year he scored two tries in the [Challenge Cup](/source/Wheelchair_Challenge_Cup) Final, a 81–18 defeat to [Catalans Dragons](/source/Catalans_Dragons_Wheelchair) in 2024.[6][7]

### International

Rigby made his [England](/source/England_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) debut in 2007 and represent them the following year at the inaugural [Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup](/source/Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup) in [2008](/source/2008_Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup). England reached the final, beating [Australia](/source/Australia_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) 44–12 in the final, finishing the tournament as champions.[8] He again represents England at the [2013 tournament](/source/2013_Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup). This saw England finish as runners-up, losing to [France](/source/France_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) in the final.[9] Rigby missed the 2017, but returned for [2021](/source/2021_Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup).[10] Rigby played throughout the tournament,[11][12] but did not feature in the [final](/source/2021_Wheelchair_Rugby_League_World_Cup_final) which saw England reclaimed the World title, beating [France](/source/France_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team) 28–24.[13] In November 2024, Rigby was made captain for what would be his final game before international retirement, a 58–28 victory over [Spain](/source/Spain_national_wheelchair_rugby_league_team).[14][15]

### Officiating

Rigby began officiating championship wheelchair rugby league games throughout 2024 before his international retirement in 2025. Shortly after his international retirement, Rigby was appointed as one of four match officials for the 2025 [Celtic Cup](/source/Celtic_Cup_(wheelchair_rugby_league)), becoming the first full time wheelchair user to referee a senior international game.[4]
