Hamdy was born and raised in [London](/source/London), United Kingdom.  He attended the [University of Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford), and graduated with a degree in [law](/source/law). He also holds a degree in [philosophy](/source/philosophy) from the [University of London](/source/University_of_London). Hamdy joined the consulting team at [Lloyd's of London](/source/Lloyd's_of_London). From there, he went on to join a niche [management consulting](/source/management_consulting) firm and worked in the technology and medical sectors.{{citation needed|date=June 2024}}

Using seed finance provided by the partners in his consulting firm, Hamdy founded a company that developed specialist [online payment systems](/source/E-Payment_Providers). He raised £7.5m in [venture capital](/source/venture_capital) to launch the business.
