British lighting designer

**Adam Bassett** (born 5 November 1978) is a British [Lighting designer](/source/Lighting_designer) working in the worlds of live performance, theatre, art and architecture.

## Education

Bassett trained at the [Central School of Speech and Drama](/source/Central_School_of_Speech_and_Drama) in London, graduating in 2000.

## Career

Bassett began his career in lighting in 2000 and since then has lit and directed productions for many artists including [Scandal](/source/Scandal_(Japanese_band)), [Simply Red](/source/Simply_Red),[1] [Adele](/source/Adele),[2] [Elton John](/source/Elton_John), [The Rolling Stones](/source/The_Rolling_Stones), [Take That](/source/Take_That), [Lady Gaga](/source/Lady_Gaga),[3] [Genesis](/source/Genesis_(band)),[4] [Mark Ronson](/source/Mark_Ronson), [Spandau Ballet](/source/Spandau_Ballet), [Emeli Sande](/source/Emeli_Sand%C3%A9).

In theatre and dance Bassett has lit productions including [Hugh Jackman](/source/Hugh_Jackman) World Tour, [The Band](/source/Greatest_Days) ([Take That](/source/Take_That) Musical), [Bear Grylls](/source/Bear_Grylls) Endeavour,[5] [Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary](/source/The_Phantom_of_the_Opera_at_the_Royal_Albert_Hall), Batman Live World Tour, Into the Hoods, [Ant and Dec](/source/Ant_%26_Dec) Saturday Night Takeaway,[6] Holiday on Ice.[7]

He has lit [Battersea Power Station](/source/Battersea_Power_Station), [The Shard](/source/The_Shard) Installations[8] and Dinosaurs in the Wild and continues to assist [The Wynn Hotels](/source/Wynn_Las_Vegas) in Las Vegas with the exterior lighting systems.

Bassett first started working with [Patrick Woodroffe](/source/Patrick_Woodroffe) in 1999 on the then [Millennium Dome](/source/Millennium_Dome), lighting both the show inside and the exterior of the building. He worked with Woodroffe on [Martin Scorsese](/source/Martin_Scorsese)'s [Shine a Light](/source/Shine_a_Light_(film)), the 2006 documentary of the Rolling Stone’s [Beacon Theatre](/source/Beacon_Theatre_(New_York_City)) performances during their [A Bigger Bang Tour](/source/A_Bigger_Bang_Tour).[9]

In 2013 he and Patrick Woodroffe created the lighting consultancy, [Woodroffe Bassett Design](https://www.woodroffebassett.com) (WBD). The company operates globally designing lighting for many different genres including music, theatrical performance, special events as well as permanent architectural entertainment installations.

Since 2003 Bassett has lit the [Vanity Fair](/source/Vanity_Fair_(magazine)) Oscar parties in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles).[10] He is the lighting designer for the [Doha Film Festival](/source/Doha_Tribeca_Film_Festival) in [Qatar](/source/Qatar),[11] which he has done since the first festival was held in 2009.

In 2012 he was the Associate Lighting Designer for the [opening](/source/Opening_Ceremony_of_London_2012) and closing ceremonies of the [2012 London Olympics](/source/2012_Summer_Olympics) and Paralympics.[12]

Bassett was the lighting designer for The 4th Islamic Games Opening & Closing Ceremonies in Baku.[13] In 2018 he started work as the Principal Consultant and Lighting Designer for [Expo 2020](/source/Expo_2020).[14]

In 2019 he lit the Pan American Games Opening Ceremony in Lima[15] and 48th UAE National Day.[16] In 2022 Bassett was the lighting designer for [The Royal Military Edinburgh Tattoo.](/source/Royal_Edinburgh_Military_Tattoo)

## Awards and nominations

In 2004 Bassett was received the EDDY Award for the best “Composite Lighting Team”.[17] In 2012 he was nominated for an [Emmy](/source/Emmy) at the [65th Primetime Emmy Awards](/source/65th_Primetime_Emmy_Awards), for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special, for his work on the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony.[18] In 2016 he was award the Knight of Illumination Awards for the lighting design of The Rolling Stones Exhibition.[19]
