The 1499 gold binding

The **Ada Gospels** ([Trier](/source/Trier), Stadtbibliothek, Codex 22) is a late eighth-century or early ninth-century [Carolingian](/source/Carolingian_art) [gospel book](/source/Gospel_book) in the Stadtbibliothek, [Trier](/source/Trier), Germany. The manuscript contains a dedication to [Charlemagne's](/source/Charlemagne) sister Ada, from where it gets its name. The manuscript is written on [vellum](/source/Vellum) in [Carolingian minuscule](/source/Carolingian_minuscule). It measures 14.5 by 9.625 inches (36.8 by 24.5 cm). The *Ada Gospels* are one of a group of [manuscript illuminations](/source/Illuminated_manuscript) by a circle of [scriptoria](/source/Scriptorium) that represent what modern scholars call the "[Ada School](/source/Ada_School)". Other products of the Ada School include the [Soissons Gospels](/source/Soissons_Gospels), [Harley Golden Gospels](/source/Harley_Golden_Gospels), [Godescalc Evangelistary](/source/Godescalc_Evangelistary) and the [Lorsch Gospels](/source/Lorsch_Gospels); ten manuscripts in total are usually recognised.

The manuscript is illuminated. Its illuminations include an elaborate initial page for the [Gospel of Matthew](/source/Gospel_of_Matthew) and portraits of [Matthew](/source/Matthew_the_Evangelist), [Mark](/source/Mark_the_Evangelist) and [Luke](/source/Luke_the_Evangelist). The illuminations show [Insular](/source/Insular_art), Italian and [Byzantine](/source/Byzantine_art) influences. The Evangelist portraits show a firm grasp of Classical style typical of the [Carolingian Renaissance](/source/Carolingian_Renaissance).

In 1499 the [codex](/source/Codex) was given a rich sculpted gold binding that includes the Late Antique Eagle Cameo displaying the family of [Emperor Constantine](/source/Constantine_I).[1]

## Notes

1. **[^](#cite_ref-1)** The Eagle Cameo is interpreted in the context of Constantine's career by Paul Stephenson, *Constantine, Roman Emperor, Christian Victor*, 2010:126f and bibliography.
