'''''Action Half-Life''''' is a [mod](/source/mod_(computer_gaming)) for the [first-person shooter](/source/first-person_shooter) [video game](/source/video_game) ''[Half-Life](/source/Half-Life_(video_game))''. It strives to simulate [action movie](/source/action_movie)s, especially those directed by [John Woo](/source/John_Woo).

''Action Half-Life'' is the second mod in the "Action" series. The first was ''[Action Quake 2](/source/Action_Quake_2)'' and the third was ''Action Unreal Tournament 2004''.

== Gameplay ==

The traditional mode of gameplay is [Deathmatch](/source/deathmatch_(gaming)); at the start of a round, players must choose a single pistol, a unique weapon, and a special item. Unlike the buy menu in ''[Counter-Strike](/source/Counter-Strike_(video_game))'', these weapons are free and have limited ammunition, which makes tactical usage crucial. The game also includes a "last man standing" mode, which plays like a deathmatch, but without respawning after death.

''Action Half-life'' also features a single player mode. Some unique features in this mode include a move called "Adrenaline Rush", similar to [Bullet Time](/source/Bullet_Time).

==Reception ==
''Action Half-Life'' was the favored modification for a small subculture described by [Rock, Paper, Shotgun](/source/Rock%2C_Paper%2C_Shotgun)'s writer Quintin Smith as a "mad cabal of mappers who obsessed over easter eggs",<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/01/11/action-half-life-the-5am/|title=Action Half-Life: The 5AM|last=Smith|first=Quintin|date=2015-01-11|website=Rock, Paper, Shotgun|language=en-US|access-date=2016-11-09}}</ref> with some levels containing secret areas much larger and more complex than the main level. These often included whole story-lines, puzzles, and scripted sequences. ''[IGN](/source/IGN)'' said the game is a standard shooter aside from the stunts and although they look cool, they get tiresome quickly.<ref name="IGN">{{cite web |last1=Carmitchel |first1=Kyle |title=Mod Watch: Action Half-Life |url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2002/08/19/mod-watch-action-half-life |website=[IGN](/source/IGN) |publisher=[Ziff Davis](/source/Ziff_Davis) |access-date=19 August 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20041019164344/http://pc.ign.com/articles/368/368285p1.html |archive-date=19 October 2004 |date=19 August 2002 |url-status=live}}</ref> ''[PC Games](/source/PC_Games)'' liked the level design and said the game is more suited for experienced players.<ref name="PCGames">{{cite magazine |title=3D-Action - Fast wie im richtigen Leben |journal=[PC Games](/source/PC_Games) |date=February 2000 |issue=2/2000 |page=45 |url=https://archive.org/details/PC.Games.N089.2000.02-fl0n/page/n43/mode/2up |publisher=[Computec Media](/source/Computec_Media) |language=German |issn=0946-6304}}</ref> ''[XtremPC](/source/XtremPC)'' played the beta 2.7 version and said the game is far below the quality of ''Action Quake 2''.<ref name="XtremPC">{{cite magazine |title=Prezentari - Mod-uri & Conversii - Action Half-Life |journal=[XtremPC](/source/XtremPC) |date=2000 |issue=3(9)/2000 |page=78 |url=https://archive.org/details/xpc-9/page/n77/mode/2up?view=theater |publisher=Romas Comercial srl |language=Romanian}}</ref> ''[CNET Gamecenter](/source/CNET_Gamecenter)'' placed it on its list of top 10 ''Half-Life'' mods, writing: "Action Half-Life, however, manages to capture a sense of danger and suspense that's missing from most frag-a-minute deathmatches."<ref name="CNET-2000">{{cite web |title=Top 10 Half-Life Mods - Action Half-Life |url=http://www.gamecenter.com/Features/Exclusives/Top10mods/ss09.html |website=[CNET Gamecenter](/source/CNET_Gamecenter) |access-date=20 February 2026 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20000612003224/http://www.gamecenter.com/Features/Exclusives/Top10mods/ss09.html |archive-date=12 June 2000 |url-status=dead}}</ref>
