**Acme** ([/ˈækmiː/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English) [*ACK-mee*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key)) is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area) in [Grand Traverse County](/source/Grand_Traverse_County%2C_Michigan) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Michigan](/source/Michigan).[2] It is located on the shore of the East Arm of [Grand Traverse Bay](/source/Grand_Traverse_Bay), located within [Acme Township](/source/Acme_Township%2C_Michigan). It is part of the urban area of [Traverse City](/source/Traverse_City%2C_Michigan).[3] Acme is home to the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.[4][5]

## History

Acme was established by L S. Hoxie from [Saratoga County, New York](/source/Saratoga_County%2C_New_York), who, after arriving here in 1864, purchased land and [platted](/source/Plat) the settlement. Alburtus T. Hoxie, son of L.S., became the first postmaster of Acme in 1869.[6] The post office had opened as "**Whitewater**" on July 16, 1857, but was renamed on June 10, 1869. Acme takes its name from a [Greek](/source/Greek_language) word, [*acme*](/source/Acme_(disambiguation)), meaning "summit".[7]

In 1892, an extension of the [Chicago and West Michigan Railway](/source/Chicago_and_West_Michigan_Railway) from [Traverse City](/source/Traverse_City%2C_Michigan) to [Petoskey](/source/Petoskey%2C_Michigan) was built through Acme.[8]

Acme's post office closed on February 15, 1933. However, it was reestablished on February 1, 1952.[9]

In 1986, the tallest building in Grand Traverse County, the tower at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, opened in Acme.[10]

## Geography

Acme is part of [Northern Michigan](/source/Northern_Michigan). It is located in southwestern [Acme Township](/source/Acme_Township%2C_Michigan), in northeastern [Grand Traverse County](/source/Grand_Traverse_County%2C_Michigan). It lies upon the eastern shore of the East Arm of [Grand Traverse Bay](/source/Grand_Traverse_Bay), a [bay](/source/Bay) of [Lake Michigan](/source/Lake_Michigan). The community is located at the mouth of the eponymous Acme Creek.[11]

### Major highways

- [US 31](/source/U.S._Route_31_in_Michigan) runs south–north through the community. To the south, the highway runs through [Traverse City](/source/Traverse_City%2C_Michigan), and further down the Lake Michigan coast. To the north, US 31 runs through [Elk Rapids](/source/Elk_Rapids%2C_Michigan) towards [Charlevoix](/source/Charlevoix%2C_Michigan), [Petoskey](/source/Petoskey%2C_Michigan), and the [Mackinac Bridge](/source/Mackinac_Bridge).

- [M-72](/source/M-72_(Michigan_highway)) intersects US 31 in the heart of the community. It follows US 31 south and west to Traverse City, and to the east, runs through [Williamsburg](/source/Williamsburg%2C_Michigan) toward [Kalkaska](/source/Kalkaska%2C_Michigan) and [Grayling](/source/Grayling%2C_Michigan).

## Education

Acme is part of the [Traverse City Area Public Schools](/source/Traverse_City_Area_Public_Schools) district. The nearest public high school is [Traverse City Central High School](/source/Traverse_City_Central_High_School).[12] Bertha Vos Elementary School, located within the community, served local elementary students until 2008.[13]
